Winston Churchill's VE Day Speech

This is part of Winston Churchill's speech that talks about the liberation of Jersey.
"Hostilities will end officially at one minute after midnight tonight (Tuesday, May 8), but in the interests of saving lives the "cease fire" began yesterday to be sounded all along the front, and out dear Channel Islands are also to be freed to-day."

Occupation of the Channel Islands

In September 1939 Jersey asked the London War Office for costal defence. However, they did not feel the defense was necessary. On June 17, 1940 Germany occupied Jersey.  The Channel Islands were the only British territories to be occupied by Germany in World War II. The Channel Islands include Jersey, Guernsey, Alderney, Sark, and Herm. The occupation lasted for five years and ended May 9, 1945 when The Channel Islands were liberated.

What the Germans Left Behind

This is a story that my mom told me. "Growing up in Jersey there were constant reminders of the German occupation. My house was five minutes away from the German Underground Hospital which was built by the prisoners of war. This hospital is now a museum. We played on and in gun towers which are on the coastline of the island."

Interview with my Grandma

How old were you when Jersey was occupied?
9 years old

What was different about Jersey when it was occupied?
There was a curfew, we weren't allowed out after 9 or 10. We had a shortage of food and we had horrible bread to eat. I would catch fish for the family to eat, and sometimes we would get a chicken or vegetables to eat. There was no outside entertainment so we had to find ways to keep ourselves entertained. I read a lot of books and we played cards. The lights were cut off early at night. We were deprived of the things that you take for granted. We didn’t have soap or toothpaste. If you wanted to brush your teeth you had to use salt. The Germans were not unkind to us but if you got in trouble you were sent to prison or deported to Germany.

What did you remember most?
I remember being very cold in the winter. I was lonely as a child because I was not allowed to go out and see friends because we had a curfew. I remember being so happy on Liberation Day and everyone was dancing in the streets.
